Car Rental in Cartagena
Within the city and to do the tours in Cartagena and visit the tourist highlights, we don’t recommend you rent a car. Cartegena is a relatively small city and you can do many things just walking or take a (cheap) taxi.
If you want to rent a car to go out of the city and visit nearby cities like Mompox or San Gil, or maybe go to Santa Marta and Tayrono, there are several options.
A good place to rent a car in Cartagena is at Rafael Nunez International Airport. You will find many rental companies like Avis, Sixt, Hertz, and Alamo Cartagena. In general, anticipate around $35 USD daily for an economy car rental vehicle with basic (mandatory) insurance (always take a Colombian auto insurance when booking online).
In order to rent a car in Cartagena, you will need your divers’ licence, your passport and a credit card (for the security deposit. The amount held can vary depending on the rental company; however, it is typically around one million Colombian pesos – equaling $240 USD. The official minimum age for car rental in Colombia is 21. You cannot take the care out of the country (to travel to Ecuador, for instance).
